June 2021
Missed the winter ski season? Make u for it this year by hitting the summer slopes.
The last two winters haven’t been kind to skiers. In early 2020, most resorts shut down abruptly because of the onset of the pandemic; this past season, capacity restrictions made booking lift tickets so frustrating that many skiers simply passed altogether.
For half the world, however, this year’s ski season is just getting started. “This upcoming summer ski season should be a big one”, says Pete Kovacevic, an expert on South America for the tour operator Alpine Adventures. What’s more, since travel restrictions are still in flux, Kovacevic notes that many places are offering extremely flexible reservation policies.
Aside from the novelty of snow in July, alternate-season ski trips offer unusual fringe benefits, such as being able to combine warm-weather pursuits — golfing, cycling, even sunbathing — with time on the slopes. From the mountains of South America to the glaciers of Europe, here are the best places to carve out a summer ski vacation.
The number one summer destination for snow lovers, Chile is the choice of many national teams and World Cup racers for off-season training. The Andes are the second-highest mountain range on earth, with epic snowfalls, yet Chile’s top resorts are affordable and accessible — a little less than two hours’ drive from Santiago, which means you can mix world-class skiing with visits to vineyards, art museums, and, if you’re willing to go a tad farther, the beach.
Ski Portillo is a longtime favorite of legends such as Bode Miller and Chris Davenport, and the Portillo Hotel, at its base, operates like a landlocked cruise ship, with value-packed all-inclusive weeklong stays featuring great food, Chilean wine,. and even a disco. The country’s other big ski resort, Valle Nevado, mean while,. plans to open two of its three base hotels — the mid-range Hotel Puerta del Sol and the deluxe Hotel Valle Nevado — this reason. Chile is also rich in opportunities for those who want to try heli-skiing. Both major resorts offer on-site day-trip hell-skiing, and several tour oper-ators offer itineraries to various mountains throughout the country.
“Valle Nevado and Portillo are always hot ski destinations, and the most popular in South America,.” says Kovacevic, but he also recommends the up-and-coming resort Nevados de Chain, which has a new luxury hotel, tree skiing not found at its competitors, and thermal hot springs. Alpine Adventures also puts together trips to Ski Arpa, in the shadow of Aconcagua (the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere), and Corralalco Mountain Resort, in the Araucania region.
Chile may get more attention, but there are several notable ski resorts on the east side of the Andes, in Argentina. Bariloche, a Patagonian city with Swiss-style architecture, is the gateway to the nation’s largest resort, Cerro Catedral, which has around 3,000 acres of skiing and stunning views of the glacial lake Nahuel Huapi. While there are plenty of accommodations at the resort base, Bariloche, just 30 minutes away, offers a truer ski-town experience, and it has one of the best luxury hotels in South America, Llao Llao, where the Obamas vacationed in 2016. Hotel guests have access to free transfers to Cerro Catedral and a private club at the base of the mountain, plus backcountry and Nordic skiing at a nearby mountain reserve.
Argentina’s other major resort, Las Lenas, is farther north, in Mendoza Province. With 14 lifts, a nearly 4,000-foot vertical drop, plenty of hike-to expert terrain, and night skiing (plus the highest casino in the world), this is the preferred option for adrenaline junkies.

Introduction
Costa Rica offers some of the world’s finest whitewater rafting and kayaking rivers.
Wild and untamed, these big, brash rivers plunge through the spectacularly beautiful, largely unexplored tropical wilderness. Enjoy a tropical river with a skilled and reputable guide service, organized in 1985 to share the beauty and abundant whitewater of Costa Rica with the rest of the world.
The owners and guides have explored numerous rivers and participated in the Olympic Games as well as several rafting and kayaking World Championships. A commitment to high quality, safety, and exceptional service has helped them become the largest whitewater rafting and sea-kayaking outfitter in Latin America. Our outfitter has been recognized internationally for its efforts in conservation, reforestation, and education of the local population.
The Pacuare River is rated one of the top rivers in the world for a host of reasons. You’ll get to explore the intimate nature of the rainforest from the river perspective. The warm water, cascading waterfalls, and opulently lush rainforest with its brilliantly colored plants, animals, and birds make this trip exquisite for your senses. Add in the exciting Class III and IV whitewater rapids and you have a tropical adventure packed with rich experiences that last long after you’ve returned home.
Lake Arenal, lying adjacent to the Arenal Volcano in the Northern Lowlands of Costa Rica, is the country’s most spectacular lake. With the magnificent Arenal Volcano to the east and rolling hills and forested slopes all around, the scenery couldn’t be better. Add to that a number of activities that include world-class windsurfing and sailboarding, fishing, kayaking, bird watching, and more, and you have the makings for a spectacular destination.
Requirements
- Prepared to learn to paddle a raft.
- Ready to get out of rafts (if necessary) for short walks.
- Willing to share a room/tent and bathroom in rustic settings.
- Able to swim in river conditions.
Itinerary
Arrive in San Jose, and transfer to Best Western Irazu Hotel & Casino, San Jose. Day and evening free to relax by the pool or explore the colorful city with its outdoor markets and many museums. Everyone has the option of meeting for happy hour and a restaurant will be suggested for your evening meal. If you decide to book your flights on your own, please make sure to arrive in San Jose after 12 PM as your check-in time at the Hotel starts at 2 PM. You can also arrive days earlier if you prefer and we can arrange your stay for that portion. We will be meeting and have a drink at the hotel’s bar between 4 PM and 6 PM. The exact time will be provided with your final trip itinerary.
Early in the morning, you will be transferred to Rios Tropicales Operations Center for a hearty “Tico” traditional Costa Rica breakfast, and with time to change into clothing for rafting, and shop for any last-minute needs in a handy outfitter’s store. You’ll then depart for private rafting put-in on the Pacuare River in San Martin. There your professional guides will load your gear into dry bags, prepare all the rafting equipment, give you complete safety and paddle instruction.
The first day’s Class III rapids welcome you to the Pacuare gorge’s charm as you raft deep in the heart of the primary rainforest. While your guides prepare a hearty picnic lunch on the riverbank, you’ll enjoy a walk through the jungle to an enchanting waterfall and pool to swim.
Before you know it, you’ll arrive at the unique Rios Tropicales Lodge where you can spend the afternoon relaxing, hiking, or soaking in waterfalls and pools. Nestled in the jungle on a 1,500-acre private reserve, the lodge offers you all the comforts you need in “Cabecar Indian” style bungalows. You’ll get the chance to settle into your rooms, then come down to the open-air dining area, where guides prepare fresh appetizers and guest-acclaimed “famous jungle punch”. As the sun dips behind the hills and the twilight fades, you will be treated to a delicious freshly prepared dinner with candlelight and wine. Ahh, this is adventure vacationing at its best!
After yet another serving of Costa Rica’s tastiest coffee and a hearty breakfast, your guides will pack up and load the rafts in preparation for paddling down the Pacuare gorge past gushing waterfalls, serene pools, and pounding rapids. A snack stop by the riverside lets you explore more waterfalls and natural waterslides. An adrenaline-packed afternoon running rapids like Upper and Lower Huacas, Cimarron, Dos Montañas, and many more, will have you cheering ecstatically. You will have transportation waiting for you at the take-out in the town of Siquirres, where you will be whisked away to the Operations Center just a few miles up the road. You will have a hearty hot lunch waiting for you upon arrival. Showers, changing rooms, cold and hot drinks, snacks, a bar, and souvenirs are all available. When you are finished with lunch, you will be transferred to La Fortuna Arenal where your trip continues. Check-in at Arenal Springs Resort and Spa.
This is a great addition to the rafting trip. This four-night extension to the Arenal Volcano and hot springs is a great reward after rafting. The day can be spent soaking weary muscles in the hot springs or partaking in the many spa services. And don’t forget the volcano! It will entertain you with shows of hot lava, steam, and explosions.
Enjoy the most plentiful breakfast, including Costa Rican “gallo pinto”, you may ever have. You can find pleasure and fun at the pool & hot springs hotel facilities; and relax, health & beauty at the Spa Resort. So be happy and let the natural hot springs by the Arenal volcano’s internal healthy energy & minerals complement all of your optional activities, such as those into nature or adventure tours.

Activities in Lake Arenal area
Duration: 3 hours
$69 per person
Soar over the canyons, through lush forests, above waterfalls, beside Arenal Volcano, and experience the adrenaline rush of observing this truly breathtaking landscape from the canopies.
This zip line tour is an authentic adventure through the rainforest. A cart pulled by a tractor will pick you up and drive you 3 kilometers down a dirt road. You will arrive at a lookout point where you can see the rushing waters of the Pino Blanco waterfall. You are surrounded by lush, green vegetation in all directions. The mere experience of observing the panoramic views is incredible and soaring through it is truly breathtaking. You will receive your equipment which is high quality and regularly examined to ensure it is in perfect condition. A guide will lead you on a 15-minute walk deeper into the forest while explaining the natural history of our county. Our guides have a deep respect for the rainforest but also enjoy joking and having fun. Once you arrive at the first platform, your adrenaline will be pumping. The guides put safety first and are incredibly reassuring. They demonstrate exactly what you need to do while you zip line.
There is nothing like the feeling of jumping off a platform and flying across canyons, through the treetops, and over waterfalls with the Arenal Volcano and Chato Hill in the backdrop. You may see many species of animals that inhabit this area such as toucans, monkeys, and frogs. We have one of the longest cables in the country (1000 meters) and one of the fastest (65-70 km/hr).
After the canopy tour, you will visit a representation of a Maleku Village that is located nearby. Members of the tribe dressed in traditional clothes greet you with a refreshing beverage and teach you about their culture, language, and traditions. They share stories about animals and the environment, expressing their appreciation for nature. Their intricate paintings on masks, bowls, and drums are available to purchase as a souvenir. You will return to the starting point on horseback. Near the entrance, there is a butterfly garden and a frog room which we encourage you to explore. If you put some fruit juice on your finger, the butterflies will land on you and exhibit the vibrant colors of their wings. We recommend that you wear long pants, comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent, and sunblock. Pregnant women, people with heart problems, back problems, or recent surgeries cannot participate in this activity.

Carnival
From the beautiful beaches of Rio de Janeiro to Rio Carnival and the Rio Nightlife, the type of energy that the city of Rio emulates is just simply electrifying. What is even more exhilarating are the deliciously bronzed samba dancers, the pulsating music, the energy and applause of the spectators filled with Cariocas, natives of Rio de Janeiro, and visitors from around the world who call come to the same place to experience the world famous Rio Carnival.
The city glows with the smiles and energy of the locals or Cariocas. Samba music can be heard coming from neighborhoods throughout the city and crowds gather to dance and play all day, night and straight into the next morning. It is the inherent spirit of the Cariocas and their true joie de vivre that makes Rio Carnival such a glorious success year after year!
Rio De Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is a 10-million inhabited metropolis by the sea.
Given Rio’s gifted landscape, with mountains, beaches, the lake and forests, cariocas and visitors are an active bunch. Ruled by the sun, Rio de Janeiro offers much more than the beaches, the Sugar Loaf and the Statue of the Christ.
What can you expect from a city that is famous for its Samba, Bossa Nova and Funk? Rio de Janeiro nightlife is all about samba clubs, jazz bars, dance halls, pubs, lounges and nightclubs. Lapa is the headquarter of the music arena in Rio de Janeiro. Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana also offer dozen of ways for to spend a couple of sleepless nights like a native in the Marvelous city. And yes, blended in with the happiest people on earth, the cariocas.
The beaches of Rio you are most likely to explore during your visit to Rio are Leme, a quieter and more visited by families, Copacabana, mostly frequented by tourists, Ipanema, Leblon and Barra. The most popular beaches are Copacabana and Ipanema. But there are other beaches you should consider such as Recreio and Praia da Reserva.
When the subject is food, variety comes in many forms in Rio de Janeiro, which is not surprising given the large immigrant population of Lebanese, Japanese, Italians, Spanish, German and French. Not to mention the Portuguese and the Africans who have strongly influenced the regional cuisine.
It’s easy to eat well in Rio, regardless of your budget and you dietary restrictions. Fresh tropical fruit is the rule for a healthy meal. In fact, most cariocas start their day with a juice that often includes an Amazonian flavor like Açai or Cupuaçu. You will notice a Juice bar in every corner of the city. Soon you will get use to them. They are you cheapest and fastest option for a squeezed-by-order mango or carambola juice, or even for a cafezinho – strong, black, sweet coffee.

Nevados de Chillan
Located in Chile’s southern region, Nevados de Chillan ski area is spread across the skirt of an active volcano Chillan and is one of the few resorts in Chile with tree skiing and hot springs. The resort enjoys some of Chile’s best snow conditions with an average snowfall of 25 ft and a diverse spread of terrain offering something for all ability levels. Nevados de Chillan in Chile is great for beginners and intermediates, but the feature of this ski resort is the interesting off-piste terrain that’s come about from a history of rivers of lava flow (none of them recently). Nevados de Chillan is renowned for its great backcountry ski touring opportunities, and the resort also offers cat skiing and heli-skiing.
Nevados de Chillan is a bit more off the radar compared to Portillo and Valle Nevado so it is rare to find long lift lines and tons of skiers tracking out the resort. Unlike Portillo and Valle Nevado, Nevados de Chillan offers tree skiing (when the snow conditions are very good). The unique feature of this resort is its natural outdoor thermal pools and one of the largest spa centers. The resort is also the only ski center in Chile that has a neighboring town, Las Trancas with more of a local’s vibe and plenty of entertaining restaurants and bars. Expert terrain around the volcano is endless. While most of the resort lacks the super steeps found in Portillo Resort to the north, most of the area is un-groomed with countless options for off-piste and backcountry exploring. It also has the longest ski run in South America (8 miles and it’s called Tres Marias), and is the only one with direct access to the thermal pools.
The off-piste and backcountry terrain is the real highlight here. You can ski tour here for days, exploring nearby valleys, summiting the volcanoes, ski some serious verticals and at the end of the day, soak in at the natural hot springs.
And don’t forget what Warren Miller has always told you “If you don’t do it this year, you’ll only be one year older when you do.” …don’t make it two.

Antarctica Express Air-Cruise
Embark on Your Antarctic Adventure
Reserve Your Spot for the Journey of a Lifetime!

Your journey begins in Ushuaia, Argentina, at the pier. Board your ship in the afternoon and sail along the Beagle Channel towards Puerto Williams, Chile, the southernmost town in the world. Explore the surroundings before setting sail to Cape Horn.

After an overnight crossing of Nassau Bay, you awake in full view of legendary Cape Horn! Weather permitting, board a Zodiac, and be one of the few privileged adventurers to step foot on this famous and rarely visited island. Back on board, set sail towards Antarctica and cross the famous passage named in honor of Sir Francis Drake, the great 16th-century British explorer.

As you sail through the Drake Passage en route to King George Island, in the South Shetland Islands, attend an engaging program of lectures and presentations. In the company of expert guides, watch for wildlife from the lounge or from the outside decks. You may spot magnificent seabirds, such as albatrosses and petrels, as well as different species of whales on their way south to Antarctica.

After crossing the Antarctic Convergence, the environment changes noticeably. Keep your camera ready, as this is the time to watch for the first icebergs and the first sight of Antarctic land. Reaching the South Shetland Islands, sail in ice-filled bays while enjoying the company of seabirds, penguins, seals, and whales. Board a Zodiac for your first memorable shore visit to a penguin colony. Taking advantage of the endless Antarctic daylight, exploration will continue well into the evening.

Upon reaching King George Island, disembark at Fildes Bay. A 2-km (1.25-mi) walk takes you through Chile’s Frei Station and Russia’s Bellingshausen Station to the aircraft. Bid farewell to Antarctica as you board the flight back to Punta Arenas. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for the night. (Note: Meals in Punta Arenas are at your leisure and not included in the program).
After breakfast, transfer to the Punta Arenas airport for your onward flight.
The January 2-8, 2021 (HEB06-AE) departure on board Hebridean Sky is a day longer and operates in reverse, with start in Punta Arenas and end in Ushuaia. An itinerary description is available on request.
